Am I missing the point??

Post by talktalk »

I wonder.

I see many negative threads relating to PvP and the PvP content area.
I also see in game the same old Ryzom with an additional area for PvP content. An area you have to make a physical effort to get into, you can't accidentally select the wrong TP ticket, you can't stumble into it or be ported there by another player. So, having made the effort / choice to get there what do you expect to happen?

I really feel this is like a non-smoker going into a designated smoking room and then complaining about the smoke!

I have taken part in the PvP bit, enjoyed it, had enough and gone back to doing my jungle digging / crafting / pod killing as usual. What is the issue here?

Actually there are several issues all of which have been discussed to death even long before ep2 hit the servers so I'm not gonna repeat them here...

Yes you are.
Review the other threads for the full gist.

However, to summarise...

1 - Many of us feel that 'content' (particularly 'content' in the form of storyline advancement 'material' items, landscape changes etc) forcibly linked to a singular style/type/taste of play makes that style/type/taste of play in effect non-consensual. Therefore, while the PvP zone in question must be entered there is, in effect, no 'choice' at all. If you want to remain relevant and linked to the story. This also, incidentally, applies to PvP areas elsewhere.

2 - Many are very concerned about the increasing leaning towards PvP. A style and type of play that has seemed very much against the Ryzom ethos up to this point. They feel that this is a bad change and, in many ways, a betrayal and cheapening of the high goals of the game expressed previously.

3 - People also feel that this war does not fit the lore very well. This is open to interpretation but I'd tend to agree from my analysis. This has also lead to people wondering, sarcastically, whether the homin leaders have become goo corrupted/replaced by imposters/subjected to orbital mind control lasers/hypnotised by space bats.

4 - Ganking and other stupidity is going on.

5 - 'Honour' is earned for dishonourable behaviour.

6 - I really need to go to bed.

There's more though, your main point was the one of 'choice' which has been addressed many times before. Frankly those phrases 'You don't have to go there' and 'Its just a game' are making me want to track people down and OOCly PvP them :P

Here you go again my friend... because it took them this long to make things remotely (balance is still borked) playable for PvP doesn't mean it wasn't always part of the game. Because you (and a few others) have chosen this delay as a way to act like it was an unplanned change does not make it so.

Please follow this link to an interview with DDC on October 14, 2003.

A snippet:
David Cohen Corval wrote:"Ryzom has both Player vs. Monster and Player vs. Player. I think they are both natural elements of MMORPGs."

"The PvP context is very interesting and has two sides. The first is dealing with the friendly competition spirit. Civilizations need to find their heroes and therefore organize competitions among their guilds and players (but these competitions can consist of crafting, foraging, magic, not just fighting). Then comes the more serious aspect of PvP: war. Well it is possible for the guilds and/or players to disagree and declare war on one another."

"The game realm, Atys, is inhabited by four playable races that are purportedly quite disparate in terms of aesthetics as well as other factors, while the player will apparently be able to fashion, to some degree, the appearance of their avatar. "
Now you can read other portions of his interviews and see there are many things changed and/or not completed yet. PvP is not completed IMHO, but it finally entering the game is not a change of plans.

It was/is these interviews that got me to sign onto the beta team long ago... I have never been a fanboy, but I have always supported the game envisioned in these very interviews.

Allow all of us to play our type of game, about a half dozen of you are acting like you have no clue about the history and design of the game. This may apply to some of the others, but you are typically well read and insightful. As I hope I have shown with this particular point of contention, that you cannot will things to be the way you want... this game is still following (somewhat) the very ideas planned long before most of the current players knew what a Homin was.

Nevrax are far from doing things well, on plan or even logically... but on the point of PvP, they merely took a long time turning it on...

I think it is very few who are surprised by the introduction of PvP. It is more the contradictive statements Nevrax gives and the extend to which it has been tied to content and the world of Atys.

:) Take this from a person that isn't into any kind of PvP (I Beta-ed/played Guild Wars for months and months, and never enter the arena... It doesn't get more PvP oriented then Guild Wars)...

Anyways, what we're seeing here is the "Squeaky Wheel Sindrome"... Just a handfull of people making a whole bunch of noise. They don't represent the whole mayority of the player base...

We can see a good example of that here! A pool made by grimjim... A pool that I may add kind of back fire on him/her...
We can see it also in game! Like I said before I don't PvP, but I've visit the area (And got caught in the middle of some nasty AoEs I may add, :) ), and one thing I see: A whole bunch of people having lots of fun!
I also see part of my Guild having lots of fun with their effort of building the Kami Temples, and I see part of my Guild going business as usual... What I haven't seen is anyone complaining about it... After all more content is more content, even if it only fits the playing stile of part of the population.

True! It's too bad that they didn't add more PvE content (But then again this event is not over yet, who knows what is comming), or that they didn't fixed some of the currently broken PvE content; but like I said before: Content is content... And at least we can see that they're doing something with the money we're giving them.

One thing is for sure: The moment PvE gets directly affected/modified because of PvP I'm going to be the 1st person that you're going to see voting "this sucks" in one of the many pools that are going to pop up... After all that's the reason why I left City of Heroes and came here full time
(They introduced PvP and it has been down hill since then... Can only imagine the horrors that the incomming City of Villains is going to bring to those poor guys)

Anyways, just my 2 dappers.

I keep reading that, and I laugh and I die a little inside everytime, :) .. What dishonorable behavior? Killing homins from the oposite side? Isn't that the whole idea behind a War/PvP?... ;)

The dishonourable part is where a person who spend more hours gaining lvl in elemental has a huge advantage over a person that has spend the same time digging.
What honour can be archieved in killing a homin that is in a game sense still a baby?

There's pvp and there's pvp, making it this central, implementing it in this way, working on it to this extent to the exclusion of other things, failing to make it interesting or to develop the story plausibly from lore and initial game setup to this point.

I couldn't agree more.

The pro pvp 'lobby' has been squeaking louldly and persistently since release yet pvp activity has been largely limited to a very few obnoxious guilds.

Note that the poll is about the event, not about PvP. There's been such a lack of... a lot of things since that first big kitin invasion that many people will be 'happy' with what they get in spite of the pvp issue.

Repeatedly polls and samplings have shown a desire for a slight decrease in PvP from the place it was at before.

That being... Limited PR areas, arena, duels.
