Ranged is a bit hard to solo but it's an ongoing promise that eventually the dev's will fix ranged.

Right click on your map (the "m" key) and place a landmark on things you'll want to find later.

I'm sorry, you won't have much luck with that either. The creatures of Atys do insanely much damage. Not only that, a lot have special attacks on which armor has no effect at all. I'd say a lightly armored mage will usualy go down in 3-4 hits, a fully armored tank maybe 7-8. Also, healers are very powerfull and can heal much more than the average mob can diss out. So basicly, without a healer the tank is as dead as the mage, with a healer they can tank almost equally well.

This might change when the proposed changes to the combat system are implemented, though.

*highlights mine* Alligene - there is hope. Your mileage may differ.

I disagree. What Sidusar is saying is that maging is the most effective skilll for powerleveling. Melee fighting is reasonably effective and many, like myself, find it more fun. Melee fighters are very common and most mages work extensively on their melee skills to increase their hp anyway. Melee gets easier as you progress, you need to learn the very important abilities to Taunt, Invulnerability, Speed and Melee Protection Aura.

Ah, my apologies, I see I wasn't completely clear. I didn't mean to say that you won't have much luck making a melee character, but that you won't have much luck making a "can take anything you can dish out" tankish character. Both the creatures of Atys and homin elementalists can dish out much more than any homin (without a healer) can take ;)

Yes, melee fighting is reasonable effective. Most meleers prefer 2-handed swords or pikes, so that they can do reasonable damage. If you're going to go for the most tankish character possible, that would be 1-handed mace with a shield. Just keep in mind your damage will be low with that setup, so soloing will be hard and if you want to level at a reasonable speed, you'll have to find a party to join with 2-handed users or elementalists to do the damage You could definitely be usefull as a tank, but you can't be "can take anything you can dish out".

Now, I use a 1h weapon and some would say I don't do low damage :P

Be what you want to be, and play it the most often. When you are unable to be that (no healer, bored etc), then choose the side skills that you would like to try and also do well at. The less you do the better you will be at one thing, the more you do less.

As this is a multiclass type game skills can augment each other but rarely do they hurt to have more (except in that the time used could have been used on main skill). I had 2 harvest trees to level 250 before I had any offense, but I had decent HP and buffs which helped me a bit to level into the where I am now and I love it. YMMV
