How to avoid burn out in any game - Ryzom in particular!

Post by borg9 »

Its another one of my silly community threads, but as I was once told 'Common sence is not that common!'

If you repeat any task to often it gets boring! - even chocolate loses its appeal after the 100th bar.

Be selfishly selfless! - Help someone else achive something they really want, other than out of team healing (which can be rewarded with mats) every game action comes with a reward to the helper. Care for a digger, collect mats for a crafter, heal a melee/caster, fight for a healer. All of these things take the focus away from your actions onto someone else, and in focusing on them makes for a more interesting time for you.

Get involved with the community - even if its antagonistic, as long as it not deliberate 'greifing'..... even griefers add something (some to poke a stick at!)

Emerse yourself in the world ... I was asked as I was walking out of Yrkanis, what I was doing. I said I was going to watch the sunset. (This was true as I was doing the Rites mission :o )

People know me and of me in-game ... I roleplay for those who want it and share knowledge where I can. Most times I play I spend more time deciding what to do than doing it. I try to have a number of tasks (goals) going at any onetime. This weekend was one of the best I have had in a long time as I was able to tick alot of my sub goals off my list! What I found tho was that acheiving this sub goals just opened up a whole new set that I hadn't even thought about.

Ryzom is more like real life than a game from one point of view..... Self motivation is the key to success. If you don't want to do anything, you don't have to. Although I see this as the games greatest strength its also its greatest weakness. A new player can spend their whole game life never knowing what Ryzom has to offer!

After just under a year of playing I found out over the weekend that there are 'dungeons' in Ryzom, well thats how I viewed them anyway.

We have sub-bosses - Named mobs
We have boss mobs - Named mobs with guards
We have super-boss NPC - Boss+Guards+strong hold
We have Kitin lairs - what I would class as sub adventures, no doors or keys or quests ... but tunnels, rooms and traps!

Along with the above we have item quests.... waits to be jumped on.....You want a ql250 focus pendent, you quest is to find a play who is willing to make it for you. Trust me thats a real QUEST, not a select mission go kill x of y.

All games have a life span based on the PLAYERs actions.

So if you find something is not fun, ask someone who finds it fun what makes it fun for them..... if even then it doesn't seem fun then you don't need to do it.

You can be a fighter, without doing anything but killing mobs. You can be a crafter without ever lifting a pick.

So there you go ... I am a bit B@W (bored at work) so I thought I would share my view point :D

Well done on this thread- i have been trying to post something similar for a while but not really known the best way to do it.

I completely agree with what you said- especially what i have highlighted. It is basically roleplaying- but for the players who dont roleplay they really dont know what they miss out on. For me RP adds a whole new dimension to the game- which i havent found with any other.

Alot of people get very anti to the negative characters of the game- but often dont realise that this person could be roleplaying their character. This as im sure alot of people are aware creates a very negative "air" around that player. Then things can get personal and people lose their sense of fun.

If more people RP this wouldnt happen (or maybe to a lesser degree) - and to stop people losing the FUN in the game i tell them to:

"Take a step away from the game as yourself - Take a step forward as your character!"

That really is my take home message :) - hope it helps those who need it :)

bored @ work ?? what is this ??? :D

Twelve weeks playing now. Still can remember to be a 100% noob.

The first thing i really realized was the freedom of the game. Second was that the game is in many parts what ppls make out of it.

My greatest fear at start was to ruin the char by wrong skilling :D

The first problem was the modular stanza thing. Which turned out to be greater then great !!

My funniest bugs are the translations of the emotes (using localized client).
- /kiss turned out to be "slap in the face"
- /wave is translated to /welle. But Welle is the word for greater waves of water)
- There are some other. But if you figured this out you can communicate like other Atysians do :D

BTW: a very unknown feature of all patches is, that the translation is getting better everytime. This is not metntioned in the patchnotes, but someone is working on it.

So if I am selfish because helping someone is giving me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, that is okee too?

I would like to make it a bit more subtile by adding that any interaction beyond "rez on clopp hill" is fine with me. That does indeed include: "Can you give me some dappers?", "I want that sword", "chrz" (still dont know what it means, but the guy was telling me he "pwned" (???) me but ran away when a fellow guildie told him of my lvls)

Ah, that is *not* like RL as I am experiencing it....

But what if that is what they want? With great knowledge comes great responsibility, the bane that any person with a fine set of brains can tell you about. The tremendous, overwhelming realization of the size of the universe and the size of mankind in that same univers is not very pleasant. Same goes for Ryzom, where bliss ignorance sometimes can be preferred.

I think I met those in EI on the hill with the weird pillars. The ones with the aggro range of 100m, right? And then your party is like jumped by 5 Uberstormcommandant Varinxes? That is a stronghold? I just thought it was dp gained too fast...

Ah, I know these. Like player generated quests, that mostly consist of a little message in Fount that says: Is anyone near Deathfly plain that can give me, ehm, a rez?

I also hope people get the roleplaying part. As Frydeswinde has developed into a purple haired lesbian midget who likes guns.
Not really like me, but hella fun to rp :-)

I very roleplay as simple reacting to the world that I am in, as the character I want to play sees it.

Wonder's how Neun will react to discovering his 'suspected' sis likes guns!

As the the lesbian bit, I know exactly how he would react.....

Neun Says: Can I watch?

Trying to link it with off-ryzom games, Named mobs are higher level than the region they are in so I would say, yep

yep quest various levels of difficulty, some pre-requsites required. An no helpful messages that tell you what skills you need to complete them. I hate running all the way to the top of clopper hill only to discover I don't have a heal spell :o

poor wording on my part ..... ment a player will get enjoyment from a game untill they get bored, boredom usual stems from repeating the same action

*Stuff about me*

I just go slow. Some of you in game have probably seen me around more than once. I've been on since beta but I had a different name then. And I did a lot of stuff in beta, stuff that I can't even do yet with my current character.

I started the official game as soon as I could and worked my way about the world. I had visited all the continents in beta so I didn't leave my home in Matis until a trip was arranged. Since then, after going once, I've sneaked to all four major continents. I've explored bits and peices of the underground. I've lost teleports, had tools destroyed and spawns lost due to patches. And I've taken these in my stride, considered it part of the game and got on with getting them back. I only just got back a lost teleport for the Trench of Trials with the help of my guild in last nights event (Go Stormdancers!). But if I had said to a GM all those months ago when I lost it, I would have missed that fun! I find that most lands are almost inaccessible to all but the most god-like of sneakers now so I have contented myself to getting a few levels in a few skills before I explore some more.

I love finding new mobs and areas, even if I don't manage to get away! And I level slowly (normally) unless I'm with my guild, as I don't like grinding much. All these things may not have turned me into an uber character (I don't even have 1 skill over level 100) but I have had so much fun doing it! I've watched people below my level whoosh through fighting or magic, get amazing titles and then quit the game in a quarter of the time I've been playing. Moving at a slow pace through the game and enjoying every minute of it is much more preferable.

*End stuff about me*

As for what I do to stave off boredom? I have to agree with Neun on one major point. Being helpful is the best! I'll rez anyone, anywhere, if I can get there in time. The further from me the better! More of a challenge that way! Last week or so I saw that someone was down on the way to the green seed camp in Matis, I was moving south just below Davae. No-one else was available so I ran back into Davae, talking to the unfortunate soul the entire time. I hopped on my mekky and legged it towards him, asking him to give me a countdown. I arrived with 10 seconds to spare but had to dismount and change to magic mode AND get the spell cast! Breathless seconds later me and the rezzee were laughing and joking about how much time was on the clock. He was only low level and wouldn't have had much dp, probably less than my mekky's food had cost! But it was so much fun, optimising my route and praying I made it in time. And while we were chatting, a lady had fallen just outside the camp itself and off I went again!

And when I make mistakes I try to make amends. And when I meet people I always greet them too. And I have a character, not just an avatar. He is a living, breathing homin in my mind, with hopes and plans for the future. I don't get bored of the game! I live it!

To true, I have been working on the same functional design and testset for a month now and whenever a tiny change is made in this phase of development, I have to plow through 150 pages of text to make sure all is correctly written down for future reference. And yet three more weeks to go before I can finalize this. And then to the next part, as this was for I think 10% of the total project.
Love my work, but I would like to start on a new part of the tree :-)

btw: Whenever I dont know what to do in Ryzom, I just chat a bit, explore and see if there are tp's I want :-)
