Is there anyway to get an accurate reading of server population?
I'm sick of logging in and only finding 8 people per region. When in a team I find its easier to jsut use region chat cause thres noone there to bother. I went to Matis and started flaming the karavan with pro kami propaganda and noone even stood up to me.
Yeah, server population, I know it was asked for before but honestly...
I wish this game would be open sourced a little, I cant imagine that a rite is that hard to implement once the engine is up.
Server population please!

Re: Server population please!
Showing the server population in a single server setup will only serve to lessen the amount of people online.
It would make sense if we had several servers to choose from. But, as it is, if you see only a few people on, and don't get on, and everyone else does the same, the server population doesn't go up as much.

Re: Server population please!
out of interest what difference does it make whether you know or not?
more of an issue for me is there are no social aspects to this game at present. So there might be 800 logged into to the server, but 3 or 4 ppl in a capital city because the only reason to go there is to briefly visit trainers/stables/shops and then its time to disappear into the wilderness again.
give us a reason to hang out in the towns please.... bars, mini games, markets, whatever but this game needs more social interaction than the current shouts of 'rez!!' or 'anyone need a tank for team?'

Re: Server population please!
The reason for me, is that i find Ryzom slowly becoming a barren place. Sure there are times and areas where this isn't always true, but i do feel like i'm playing a single-player game rather than a multi-player game sometimes.rushin wrote:out of interest what difference does it make whether you know or not?
I'd also like to know, mainly due to the fact i view MMORPG's as a long-term game. I get excited by the prospect of playing a character and interacting with other characters over X amount of time (where X is longer than a few months). Generally, seeing a server population gives you the information to determine (over time) whether the game you are playing is going to last longer than you hoped to imagine.
Put it this way, would i of bought Ryzom if on the box it says "Servers and service will only be available till Q3 2005" - Nope not a chance. Likewise with seeing the server population - if it's just stupidly low, then i wouldn't play for much longer (and that's just me, i like to know that i will see other players and interact with other players on a constant basis).
I've said before in other posts, i'm dubious at best that Ryzom (in it's current state) can deliver on its promises, and keep the servers and story going for 8 years. Seeing a server population (whilst no-where near accurate) does give you a decent'ish view on how the game (and the business running it) are doing.
The population is your friend
Heres an idea (albeit a rather bad and impractical one) to figure out server pop:
Use the /who command in every region you encounter and place everyone you see in your friends list, even if they are technically not your "friend". Anyone you ever see, hear speak, or have heard of also place in this list. Assuming that you could get every single person in the population on your friends list, you could actually do a server count by tallying up the blue screens. I realize this idea is ridiculous, but hey, its kind of a solution to the original query.
I do recommend having an extensive friends list just so you can get a rough idea of the level of activity, and so you can ask around to keep up with whats going down in other parts of the world. You will realize that Ryzom is far from unpopulated, but if you only visit certain regions that may be the impression. I think it is a result of everyone being spread over something like 30-50 regions, and a person in one region is only aware of the people in the same region. So if you're looking for regions with a lot of people, ask around and you will find it eventually. There are also places where you can spend a whole day digging and never see another person.
I didn't go so far as to put absolutely everyone on my list but I do have about 75 people in my friends list, some of whom I have only had cursory dealings with. When I log, usually only about 10-20% of those people happen to be on and its never more than 45%. I do agree that more people would make for a more dynamic community, but there are also benefits to the smallness of Ryzom in that once you have been around long enough, most people know youre name.

Re: Server population please!
Ask guild leaders to post their guild roster #s, those are easily seen in the Guild Info screen... then add them up.
P.S. Aye, I know this will not be 100% accurate, but it will give you a general idea...

Re: Server population please!
Things do seem to be slow lately. Perhaps things will pick up again once there's new content and a little more advertising. Another thought is the time of year - I know many of my usual playmates are very busy right now (school, work, etc), which is why they're not playing so much.
I've been running around on my own a lot lately, but it doesn't feel like the game is dying. Not to me.
