I have a HP pavilion ze5400, with all the updated video drivers. I also downloaded DirectX 9C. Didn't help. If I could reduce the graphics I would, but it's the log in screen that goes black. Is there any other way I can reduce the graphics on the game from outside our increase my video driver?

Could be video driver/hardware configuration problems. We would need a few details such as video card and what drivers you are using before being able to diagnose anything.
