If you are on Road Runner in the United States it seems there are some issues affecting their connections. And not just Ryzom is affected. There is no ETA for a resolution that we know of.

The reason more companies do not work on native Linux game clients comes down to money. Linux users are notoriously bad for not wanting to pay for stuff.

Look in the second item of the Network FAQ where it explains how to set up the game port in Windows SP2 firewall. Make sure that one port is forwarded through your router too.
